Un
Paese, Scanno 1999
Scanno, which is in the middle of Italy some 2000m
above sea level in the Apennine mountains, is an old stone built
village which has been in existence since before the Romans. In this
village traditional customs and events are kept and handed down,
and a life style that could almost be called the original Italian
model is lived plainly.Festivals, traditional customs and the village
people who preserve a spirit, which could be called the soul of
Scanno. Lively portraits of old ladies dressed in traditional costume.
Moreover Scanno could be called the photographic
Mecca of Italy, having been featured in works by Henri Cartier-Bresson
and Mario Giacomelli (spelling)

Latitude 43 Degrees North
From Peking to Paris, across Eurasia following the Silk
Road. And then one year later to America and Hokkaido. A journey
on roughly the same latitude around the globe.
Around latitude 40 degrees north in the border area where the deciduous
forests merge into the coniferous, there are many different peoples
living, gathered together. I wanted to see this world where people
with different religions, cultures and ways of living exist side
by side. Climbing walls and bridges, following the roads, I went
right around the earth.
